Professor Tania SorrellProfessor Tania Sorrell

Director of the Centre for Infectious Diseases and Microbiology

Tania Sorrell is Professor of Clinical Infectious Diseases and Director of the Centre for Infectious Diseases and Microbiology, the University of Sydney at Westmead.

She is a graduate of the University of Adelaide, with an MD in Clinical Immunology. She was appointed Professor of Clinical Infectious Diseases at the University of Sydney in 1988.

 

She has served on many National and State Committees including Advisory bodies for Infectious Diseases, Drug Evaluation and Research.

 

She is currently a member of the NHMRC Research Committee, Chair of the Urgent Research Subcommittee, member of the Strategic Research Initiatives Subcommittee and the Clinical Research Advisory Group. She is a member of the NHMRC Australian Health Ethics Committee.

She pioneered the establishment of Infectious Diseases as a discipline of Internal Medicine in Australia and has written extensively on the pathogenesis, epidemiology and treatment of fungal infections. She is a consultant in, and Head of, Infectious Diseases at Westmead Hospital.



Research Interests

 

These include the pathogenesis and epidemiology of cryptococcal infections, new antifungal drug discovery and development of novel diagnostics based on magnetic resonance spectroscopy.
