Associate Professor Jon Iredell
Bacteriology, Antibiotic Resistance, and Rapid Diagnostics
A/Professor Jon Iredell has comprehensive training in intensive care, infectious diseases and clinical microbiology, combined with a PhD in molecular bacteriology. He also provides a clinical service.
Jon heads the Bacteriology, Antibiotic Resistance, and Rapid Diagnostics group which has described the molecular basis for emergent carbapenem resistance in Acinetobacter spp., and was also the first to describe the arrival of transmissible carbapenem resistance genes in this country and its variable phenotype. They have also successfully applied these discoveries to control outbreaks at Westmead Hospital, and led a team invited by the State Government of Victoria to report on extreme antibiotic resistance in a major ICU in Melbourne in 2004.
His group first characterised the genomic diversity of a unique angiogenic intracellular bacterial pathogen (Bartonella henselae), and was involved in the characterisation of the unique intracellular trafficking of that pathogen.
Jon was the inaugural Division 1 Chair (Medical and Veterinary Microbiology, comprising approximately 60% of the membership) of the Australian Society for Microbiology (2002-2004). Until recently, he was Chair of the Basic and Clinical Sciences Committee in the Faculty of Medicine and took up the role of Deputy Post-Graduate Coordinator for the Faculty of Medicine (Western), of the University of Sydney, and presently supervises five graduate students.
In 2007 A/Professor Jon Iredell was presented the ASM/ bioMerieux research award (identifying antibiotic
resistance).
