Gyneacological Oncology Research Group

Anna deFazio is Senior Clinical Lecturer, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, University of Sydney and the Head of the Gyneacological Oncology Research Group, Westmead Institute for Cancer Research at Westmead Hospital.

She graduated from the University of New South Wales in 1981(BSc, Hons) and went on to complete a PhD in the Department of Cancer Medicine / Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, University of Sydney in 1987.

She embarked on postdoctoral studies at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research in Sydney (1988-1995) and moved to the Department of Gynaecological Oncology at Westmead Hospital in 1995. Dr deFazio was appointed a Senior Clinical Lecturer of the University of Sydney in 1999.

Research Interests

Dr deFazio has long standing commitment to translational research with an emphasis on gynaecological malignancies. Her research program is focussed on improving treatment outcome, particularly for patients with ovarian cancer, and on identifying factors that modify risk of developing cancer.

She works with a small team of postdoctoral researchers, postgraduate students and research staff and has active collaborations with other local and national research groups. The group is supported by national and international peer-reviewed grants.

Dr deFazio is on the management committee of the Australian Ovarian Cancer Study (AOCS), a national molecular epidemiology study on ovarian cancer and is the head of the AOCS Clinical Follow-up Core. She is also a chief investigator for the Australasian Biospecimens Network (ABN-Oncology).
