Two WMI projects have been successful in gaining grants: Biological probes for understanding mammalian cellular transport mechanisms and Approved Gene-brain pathways in emotional brain stability and instability. Click here for more information.

NSW Premier's Award for Outstanding Cancer Research Fellow

Dr Linda BendallWestmead Millennium Institute Dr Linda Bendall was recognised for her cancer research into the treatment of leukaemia. Dr Bendall’s laboratory has led research into the ways cells interact to cause acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), which occurs most commonly in children. Dr Bendall’s research uncovered new information about factors which may slow or prevent the growth of leukaemia. In the coming year, this research will very likely be taken into new clinical trials testing these promising new treatments.

Allergy – it’s in the genes

Dr Graham Jones

In a world first scientists at the Westmead Millennium Institute have identified how a gene associated with allergic diseases such as asthma and eczema works, providing new hope for potential drug treatments. The results of this two-year NHMRC-funded study are reported in the May edition of the internationally prestigious ‘Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology’. Click here for news release.

Dr Julianne Djordjevic

Invasive fungal infections (IFIs) are a serious problem in people with poorly functioning immune systems. In two recently published manuscripts in the Journal of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Microbiology, a team headed by Dr Julianne Djordjevic, delineated the secretory pathway of Plb1. Research Support

The following bodies provide important support to WMI research.

The Westmead Millennium Institute is one of the largest medical research institutes in Australia with over 420 staff conducting research into a wide range of important human disorders affecting both adults and children.

Our research spans:

  • infectious and immune diseases
  • cancer and leukaemia
  • liver and metabolic diseases
  • eye and brain-related disorders
  • heart and respiratory disorders.

Closely affiliated with both Westmead Hospital and the University of Sydney, our research extends from the laboratory to the patient, using the basic tools of molecular and cell biology, genetic epidemiology, imaging technology and clinical research.

This ‘Bench to Bedside’ approach enables greater translation of research from biomedical discovery to the development of new prevention strategies, diagnostics and more effective treatments.

Research in focus - July 2008

National Diabetes Week (13 - 19 July)

Professor David Harris

David Harris is Professor of Medicine and Associate Dean and Head of Western Clinical School. He is Director of the Renal Failure Laboratory in the Centre for Transplantation and Renal Research, Westmead Millennium Institute, and a nephrologist at Westmead and Blacktown Hospitals.

His major clinical interests are the prevention and management of chronic renal disease, as well as the management of patients with endstage renal failure by peritoneal and haemodialysis.
