Electron Microscopy
On this page you will find the following information about the Westmead Electron Microscope Laboratory, a Westmead Research Hub Facility.
About Us
The Electron Microscope Laboratory is located in the Tissue Pathology department of the ICPMR, and is operated as a joint facility of the ICPMR and the Westmead Research Hub.
The laboratory has routine diagnostic responsibilities to Tissue Pathology, provides support to other ICPMR units, and is a NATA accredited facility to AS 4633 -2004 (ISO15189:2003).
The laboratory was founded in 1972, (relocating to Westmead in 1977) and has evolved into a comprehensive life science support facility, offering conventional and low temperature techniques for transmission electron microscopy.
Access to the Laboratory
The laboratory facilities are available to all Westmead campus researchers (on a consumables cost only basis). The laboratory is staffed by an experienced group of scientific and technical specialists who will assist with applications advice, comprehensive training and on-going support.
Clients are expected to become technically self sufficient as their skills and experience develop. Due to the small number of core staff in this facility, contractual work cannot currently be undertaken.
New users are required to complete an Occupational Health and Safety module, specific to the laboratory, before undertaking any work in the facility.
Specific safety rules are in place, covering various aspects of the laboratory activity. Detailed methods monographs have been prepared by the laboratory, and are available as controlled documents.
Researchers intending to use the facility should prepare a short synopsis of their project, indicating the specific questions / problems that need to be addressed, number of samples and timeframe for completion of their project.
Laboratory facilities are available Monday to Friday, 0800 – 1700. “Out of hours” access for specified activities may be granted to experienced users.
Booking Instrumentation
Instrument bookings are currently made on booking sheets in the laboratory, but the laboratory is investigating on-line booking with a view to implement in 2007.
Location
The laboratory is located on Level 3 ICPMR building (Block 07 / Room 3084).
