Advisory Board

The members of the Advisory Board for the Westmead Millennium Institute are:

Mr Paul R Bell (Chairman)

 

Mr Paul Bell is the former President of Merck and Co's Asia Pacific Division and member of the Merck Management Committee. He retired at the end of 2002 after almost 30 years with Merck in New Zealand, U.S.A., and Australia.


He has represented the Australian pharmaceutical industry on a variety of industry/government committees including the Prime Minister's Science Council Working Party on the Pharmaceutical Industry and the Pharmaceutical Industry Action Agenda Leaders Group. In July 2003 he joined the board of Directors of GroPep, an Adelaide based biopharmaceutical company. Paul joined the board of Cochlear Ltd in August 2005. He is also a director of Biolink Partners Limited, a member of the Federal government Pharmaceutical Committee and a member of the Garvan Institute of Medical Research Business Development Advisory Council.

Emeritus Professor Peter A Castaldi AO

 

Emeritus Professor Peter Castaldi was the Foundation Professor of Medicine at Westmead Hospital and was Chairman of the Board of the Sydney West Area Health Service from 1996 to 2004.

 

Professor Castaldi has special interests in education and medical research and has been the major driving force over the years in the development of the strong research base of Westmead hospital, leading to the establishment of the Institute.

 

He has been on the Advisory Board of the Institute since its inception.

Professor Steven Boyages

 

Professor Steven Boyages is currently the Chief Executive of the Sydney West Area Health Service (SWAHS) and has professorial appointments to the University of Sydney and the University of Western Sydney.  

 

He was previously the Director of Diabetes and Endocrinology at Westmead Hospital from 1990 to 1999.

 

Steven was the foundation director of the Centre for Research and Clinical Policy in NSW Health.

Mr Philip Chronican

 

Mr Philip Chronican is Group Executive at Westpac Institutional Bank. Mr Chronican has been with Westpac for 24 years in a variety of positions and prior to that he worked in public policy at the Treasury in New Zealand.

 

He has been a member on the Millennium Foundation Board since 2003 and a member on the Advisory Board of the Millennium Institute since September 2004. He is also on the Board of the Australian Financial Markets Association.

 

Mr Chronican holds a B Com (Hons) from Otago University in Dunedin, New Zealand and an MBA (Distinction) from IMI - University of Geneva, Switzerland.

Professor Tony (Anthony) Cunningham

 

Professor Cunningham is the Director of the Westmead Millennium Institute, Director of the Centre for Virus Research, Professor of Research Medicine and Sub-Dean (Research) Western Clinical School, the University of Sydney and Co-ordinator/Director of the National Centre for HIV and Hepatitis Virology Research.

 

He sits on a number of local and international advisory boards for the development of antivirals and vaccines.

Clinical Associate Professor Michael Fearnside AM

 

Clinical Associate Professor Michael Fearnside is a specialist in Neurosurgery. He is the Director of Surgery for the Eastern and Central Clusters in the Sydney West Area Health Service. He was President of the Neurosurgical Society of Australasia. He has been a Member of the New South Wales Medical Board since 1997 and the Deputy President of the Board since 2005. His clinical research interests included the management of head injury and outcome prediction as well as epilepsy surgery.

 

He was involved, on behalf of neurological surgeons, in negotiations with the Federal Government in respect of medical indemnity. He is a former President of this august society and Past-President of the Neurosurgical Society of Australasia.

 

Professor Fearnside was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia in 2008 for service to medicine, particularly neurosurgery, as a clinician, researcher and educator, to medical administration and the development of professional standards, and to the medico-legal sector.

Dr Michael Spence

 

Dr Michael Spence returned from the University of Oxford in mid 2008 to take up the position of Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Sydney.

While at Oxford, Dr Spence became internationally recognised in the field of intellectual property theory. He remains a consultant to London law firm, Olswang and serves as a WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center Panellist.
He served as head of the Law Faculty at the University of Oxford and most recently, was Head of the Social Sciences Division, one of the four Divisions that make up the University.

One of his priorities at Oxford was to encourage fundraising and substantial sponsorship from benefactors and corporate groups. He was a driving force behind the establishment and financial support of a number of Oxford's new research centres and institutes, such as the Oxford Centre for Educational Assessment and the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment.

Mr Patrick Wilde (President Millennium Foundation)

 

Mr Patrick Wilde has been a solicitor since 1967 and has also been involved in the real estate industry continuing a family involvement which goes back over fifty years. Pat is a pioneer in Australia of the retirement village industry. He established Henry Kendall Village in 1984 and by the end of 2005 his group was the largest privately owned retirement village group in New South Wales. It was taken over by a consortium of public companies at that time.

 

Patrick is a member of the NSW Executive of the Retirement Village Association as well as being a member of the Executive of the UDIA Chapter on the Retirement Village Industry. He is the Industry Partner Investigator and Chair of the Advisory Group for a major industry and ARC funded study of the retirement village industry now being conducted jointly by the University of New South Wales and Bond University. He is also a Governor of the Historic Houses Trust of NSW.

 

As a long time supporter of medical research, Pat is a Life Benefactor and incumbent President of the Millennium Foundation and Chairman of the Institute for Immunology and Allergy Research.

Mr James Wakim

 

Mr James Wakim is the Managing Director of Arab Bank Australia. He is a career banker with experience both in Australia and internationally.


James is the immediate past President of the Millennium Foundation and a member of the Westmead Millennium Institute Advisory Board.


James also serves on a number of other boards including government bodies and community related initiatives. He is also a prominent advocate of International trade links with the Middle East markets.
