Scientist workingOur Vision

The Westmead Millennium Institute will continue to grow as a world leader in medical research with the power to improve the health of all mankind.

Our "Bench to Bedside" philosophy will ensure that our research outcomes are rapidly translated into better prevention strategies, treatments and healthcare for all.

Heavy Snoring Linked to Stroke

Sharon LeeA five year study conducted at the Ludwig Engel Centre for Respiratory Research (LECRR), Westmead Millennium Institute has concluded that the prevalence of cholesterol plaque in the neck arteries is more than 60 per cent in people who snore heavily. Eureka Prize finalist

Dr David BoothDr David Booth was a finalist in the Eureka Prize for determined, innovative and multi-pronged research that, in one of the most significant advances in MS research in recent years, successfully identified that the gene interleukin 7 receptor alpha (IL7Ra) is associated with multiple sclerosis; for finding the differences between the genetic variants that are likely to effect disease susceptibility; and for developing new therapeutic strategies based on these discoveries to treat multiple sclerosis.

NSW Premier's Award for Outstanding Cancer Research Fellow

Dr Linda BendallWestmead Millennium Institute Dr Linda Bendall was recognised for her cancer research into the treatment of leukaemia. Dr Bendall’s laboratory has led research into the ways cells interact to cause acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), which occurs most commonly in children.

Visceral fat: a key mediator of steatohepatitis in metabolic liver disease

Dr David van der Poorten

David van der PoortenThis article s the first to show that increasing amounts of visceral fat (the fat around internal organs) is the strongest risk for developing non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), the worst form of fatty liver disease. This has significant implications and suggests from now on doctors should assess visceral fat levels in all patients with fatty liver disease to better identify those that need a liver biopsy and intensive treatment. The Westmead Millennium Institute is one of the largest medical research institutes in Australia with over 420 staff conducting research into a wide range of important human disorders affecting both adults and children.

Our research spans:

  • infectious and immune diseases
  • cancer and leukaemia
  • liver and metabolic diseases
  • eye and brain-related disorders
  • heart and respiratory disorders.

Closely affiliated with both Westmead Hospital and the University of Sydney, our research extends from the laboratory to the patient, using the basic tools of molecular and cell biology, genetic epidemiology, imaging technology and clinical research.

This ‘Bench to Bedside’ approach enables greater translation of research from biomedical discovery to the development of new prevention strategies, diagnostics and more effective treatments.

Eczema
Asthma

Ovarian Cancer

Dr Graham JonesDr Graham Jones has identified how a gene associated with allergic diseases such as asthma and eczema works, providing new hope for potential drug treatments.

The article "Allergy - its in the genes" reports on the results of this two-year NHMRC-funded study in the May edition of the internationally prestigious ‘Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology’. Click here for news release.

Dr Anna de FazioDr Anna deFazio has long standing commitment to translational research with an emphasis on gynaecological malignancies.

Her research program is focussed on improving treatment outcome, particularly for patients with ovarian cancer, and on identifying factors that modify risk of developing cancer.
